Purim is celebrated by the reading of the Scroll of Esther, known in Hebrew as the Megillat Esther, which relates the basic story of Purim. Under the rule of King Ahashuerus, Haman, the King's prime minister, plots to exterminate all of the Jews of Persia. His plan is foiled by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai, who ultimately save the Jews of the land from destruction. The reading of the megillah is typically a rowdy affair, punctuated by booing and noise-making when Haman's name is read aloud.

Purim is celebrated annually according to the Hebrew calendar on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar ,the day following the victory of the Jews over their enemies. Purim is instead celebrated on the 15th of the month of Adar on what is known as Shushan Purim, since fighting in the walled city of Shushan continued through the 14th day of Adar.

On Saturday, March 15, 2014, the Agudas Israel Congregation read the ten chapters of the megillah...The evening was chaired by Audrey Shemesh, with the religious school students participation...the costumes were fabulous and everyone enjoyed wonderful homemade Hamentashen made by the Sisterhood.
